As the cofounder of the ActionCOACH New Zealand Education Foundation, Robert McTague is no stranger to the world of not-for-profits.

So when ActionCOACH, the world's leading business and executive coaching firm, announced its first-ever global pro bono business coaching program, Coaching for a Cause to help the charitable and non-profit sectors, McTague decided to pledge his time to the Whanu Family Support Trust.

"The Whanau Family Support Services Trust gives us an opportunity to expand our involvement in education to another level. It addresses adult education and literacy in a number of ways including financial literacy, basic budgeting, computer training, retraining etc," he said.

The brainchild of ActionCOACH founder and Chairman Brad Sugars, the overall aim of Coaching for a Cause is to raise at least $2.5 million in additional donations over a period of six months, beginning October 1, 2009.

McTague has joined over 100 top Business Coaches worldwide to help his favorite charity grow, despite the flailing economy.

"Discussions to date have revealed that their funding for 2010 is looking to be down 17%. Our goal is to bring that back and grow it by a further 10%," he said. "We will accomplish this by identifying new grant opportunities and by expanding the services into the corporate arena."

The Whanau Family Support Services Trust, which now provides literacy, language and numeracy support for the region, started as a result of the support parents needed as the schools were changing to incorporate going from primary to Intermediate. As a result of this, parents were worried they would have to purchase extra school uniforms, books and school supplies.

"The response was for the local Wainuiomata Community but people came from the Lower Hutt Community because they said the support was helpful to the families," Manager at the Whanau Group, Serenah Nicholson said.

Nicholson identifies marketing and systems to be the main challenges facing them, and believes they will reach their goal of becoming the leading literacy provider in their community sooner as a result of the pro bono business help offered through the Coaching for a Cause initiative.

McTague is reviewing this charity's vision, mission, USP, recruitment, expense reduction and direct mail marketing, among other things to deliver the results.

McTague and Nicholson are excited about working together on reaching their goals over the next six months.

"I believe the initiative is way overdue. ActionCOACH teaches the ‘law of reciprocity,' and now Coaching for a Cause gives everybody a chance to participate in giving, no matter what their circumstance is," McTague said.

Coaching for a Cause is an innovative new program from ActionCOACH, the world's number one business and executive coaching firm, that makes pro-bono coaching available to charities and non-profits worldwide.
